The PhD programme has an average residency period of three years. Studies have however shown that only less than 25% of PhD candidates graduate within the minimum residency period while between 45% and 50% drop out of the programme. The most commonly cited reasons for the delay in completion and drop-out revolve around a mismatch of expectations and realities on both sides of the Candidate-Supervisor relationship. With a panel of subject experts, this symposium discusses how to navigate around these issues and provide academic mentoring for emerging African scholars.
With the target audience being current and potential postgraduate students and supervisors, the symposium is to celebrate Prof. Clifford Odimegwu of the Demography and Population Studies Programme, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa on his 60th birthday. Clifford has supervised 45 Honours and MA dissertations, 23 PhD theses and 14 Postdoctoral fellowships.
