Overview
The Chevening Energy Market Reform Fellowship is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
It’s for senior officials and professionals from the energy sector in China.
Through dedicated research, fellows will learn how to design and implement effective energy policies, navigate regulatory frameworks, and drive sustainable energy reforms.
The fellowship will take place at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee.

The Chevening Energy Market Reform Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for exceptional candidates to work on a research project that supports the broader aims of the UK-China Energy Dialogue*.
Fellows will explore issues such as:
- Improving market efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness in national energy sectors
- Addressing challenges related to grid modernisation, policy incentives, and sustainable energy adoption
- Balancing demand growth with environmental concerns and ensuring reliable, affordable energy access
Fellows will gain:
- In-depth knowledge of energy market policies and regulatory frameworks
- Practical skills in designing and implementing sustainable energy solutions
- Access to a network of global energy experts and policymakers
*At the time of interview, your proposed research will be discussed with a University of Dundee faculty member.
Eligibility
In addition to meeting our standard eligibility criteria, you must:
- Be a citizen of China and currently live in the country
- Hold a postgraduate (PG) level qualification (or equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant area) at the time of application
- Have at least five years’ relevant work experience prior to applying or currently be enrolled as a PhD candidate (please note, your PhD must not be with a UK/EU or USA university)
Funding and benefits
Each fellowship includes:
- Full programme fees
