Answer all the following questions critically, comprehensively and expeditiously

1. Why are we the way we are in Nigeria and what should we do to become what we need to be as a nation?

2. Clearly discuss the capability approach to development and expand its underlying assumptions.

3.As a concept, Economic development can be seen as a complex multi-dimensional concept involving improvements in human well-being. Discuss

4.Professor Dudley Seers argues development is about outcomes ie development occurs with the reduction and elimination of poverty, inequality and unemployment within a growing economy. Do you agree?

5.In the words of Amartya Sen ā€œDevelopment requires the removal of major sources of unfreedom, poverty as well as tyranny, poor economic opportunities as well as systematic social deprivation neglect of public facilities as well as intolerance or over activity of repressive states….ā€

Discuss this assertion with classical examples from Nigeria and Cameroon

6.There is not a perfect correlation between happiness and per capita income: people could be poor, but happy; rich, but and unhappy. Do you agree? If yes, why, If no, why?

10. Trace the historical emergence of Development economics as a branch of economicsĀ 

11.Development economics is a branch of economics which deals with economic aspects of the development process in low-income countries.Its focus is not only on methods of promoting economic growth and structural change but also on improving the potential for the mass of the population. Discuss

12. What is the rationale for Studying Development Economics?

13 Discuss analytically and comprehensively, the Origin of the expression ā€œThird World Countriesā€

14.The Bandung conference, in 1955, was the beginning of the political emergence of the third world.

15. Developing countries are defined according to their Gross National Income (GNI) per capita per year. Countries with a GNI of US$ 11,905 and less are defined as developing (specified by the World Bank, 2015) and $12,275 (World Bank, 2019). Discuss

16.Based on the 2012 and 2017 Human Development Index, Nigeria ranked low at 153rdĀ  and 157th with a HDI value of 0.471 and 0.532 respectively which signifies low human development. Discuss

Dr Anthony Orji

Senior Lecturer, Economics, UNN

Dr Anthony Orji is a Ph.D holder in Economics and a lecturer at the Department of Economics, University of Nigeria Nsukka.

He obtained his B.Sc, Msc and Ph.D Degrees from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and a Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Local Economic Development (SLED) from Erasmus University, Rotterdam Netherlands.
