Call for Book Chapters: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: Multidisciplinary Perspectives from Africa

THE NIGERIAN YOUNG ACADEMY

SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES WORKGROUP
[Extended call for contributions – till 30th April 2023]
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: Multidisciplinary Perspectives from Africa

Editors: Uchenna Oyali, Anthony Orji, Oluwasola Omoju, Oluwabunmi Oyebode, Olumuyiwa Adegun (Secretary)

In 2015, the United Nations’ General Assembly set up the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are a collection of 17 global goals that are designed as “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.” The goals (https://sdgs.un.org/goals), which are meant to be achieved by 2030, cut across different aspects of life ranging from zero hunger and good health and wellbeing to climate action, quality education, gender equality, decent work and economic growth. Several tools have been put in place in order to monitor the progress of the development goals. According to the 2017 Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals produced by the World Bank Group, the world development indicators show that Sub-Saharan Africa is still struggling to achieve a number of these goals. For example, poverty, child stunting and malnutrition are increasing in Sub-Saharan Africa while babies in rural areas are less likely to be registered than in urban centres. Moreover, the ratio of students completing lower secondary schools in Sub-Saharan Africa remains low at 42% when compared with a global ratio of 75% as at 2014, while more than half of all urban dwellers in Sub-Saharan Africa live in slums. Thus, there is still the need to examine the current challenges facing the achievement of these goals and find practical solutions that will positively influence the daily lives of all Africans, particularly from the social sciences and humanities perspectives. Thus, we (THE SOCIAL SCIENCES/HUMANITIES WORKING GROUP OF THE NIGERIAN YOUNG ACADEMY) invite scholars across a variety of disciplines (education, mass communication, sociology, architecture, estate management, economics, political science, history, theatre arts, linguistics, literature, religious studies, philosophy, etc) allied to the social sciences and humanities “to further contribute to the advancement and achievement of the SDGs by bringing in their African perspectives” (Gawanas, 2020). Scholars are expected to contribute original and excellent abstracts/chapters related to any of the 17 SDGs listed below:

GOAL 1: No Poverty

GOAL 2: Zero Hunger

GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being

GOAL 4: Quality Education

GOAL 5: Gender Equality

GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

GOAL 10: Reduced Inequality

GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

GOAL 13: Climate Action

GOAL 14: Life below Water

GOAL 15: Life on Land

GOAL 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

GOAL 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Contributions should not be more than 7,000 words (including abstract, references and appendices), in 12-point Times New Roman font, and typed double-spaced. References must conform to the APA style (7th edn). Abstract of not more than 250 words and a short bionote (100 words) of the author(s), should be sent electronically to nyassh.bookproject@gmail.com by 30th of April, 2023 after which authors of accepted abstracts/proposals will be asked to submit the completed chapter. All chapters will undergo the double-blind peer-review system. The edited book will be published by a reputable international publisher.
