If you are interested in becoming a Pulte Institute Policy and Practice Visiting Associate at Notre Dame, please complete an online application through Interfolio. Please be prepared to provide the following as part of your application:
- A cover letter addressing the following:
- Your interest in the Pulte Institute Visiting Associates Program and specifying your preferred term of stay.
- The funding amount requested to cover any stipend, travel, housing, and publication/outreach needs during your proposed term.
- A curriculum vitae.
- A description of one or more strategic research publications that will result from your time at Notre Dame in the Pulte Institute Visiting Associates Program. This should include relevance to present-day global policy issues; potential connections to current research at the University of Notre Dame; avenues for engaging key thought leaders, policymakers, government agencies, the private sector, or the academy.
- Three professional references.
Pulte Institute Visiting Associates are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis.
Application Process
Visiting Associates are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis. The Pulte Institute may also choose to send out solicitations to partners, practitioners, and researchers within the identified focus areas. Interested applicants are asked to submit their application documents through the following application portal: https://apply.interfolio.com/55007. If the applicant has more than one proposal they want considered, they are encouraged to submit them together in the Proposal Description.
While completing the application form through Interfolio, applicants will be asked to provide the following:
- Cover Letter
- Including proposed timeframe and budget
- CV
- Proposal Description
- You may submit more than one proposal with your application
- Three References with Contact Information
- Letters not required
Visiting Associate positions are accepted on a competitive basis. A review committee will evaluate applications based on the following selection criteria:
- What is the topic for the strategic publication?
- Does the topic align with an identified advocacy area of current interest?
- What policy recommendations and policy audience does the applicant propose?
- What is its interest and importance to key thought leaders, policymakers, government agencies, the private sector, or the academy?
- Does the topic relate to “trending” policy discussion?
- If further ND collaboration is included in the proposal, how does the strategic publication relate to the research themes of other colleges, schools, institutes, centers, and initiatives across Notre Dame?
- What opportunities are there for Notre Dame faculty and researchers to collaborate on the publication with the applicant?
- What is the quality of the proposed publication(s), including strength of data/evidence and clarity and relevance of the policy recommendations?
- What avenues for outreach and dissemination through the applicant’s full-time organization of employment or professional or academic networks does the applicant provide?
- What other opportunities for outreach and policy impact does the applicant envision (conferences, op-eds, articles, speaking engagements, etc.)?
In order to best address the various review criteria, we highly recommend incorporating the following sections in the “Proposal Description” document in your application:
- Overview of the proposed topic and presentation of key evidence that will support your policy publications
- If you have already identified potential ND centers or faculty that you intend to collaborate with, please note this
- Proposed Policy Recommendations
- Proposed Policy Audience
- Potentials for outreach and dissemination of the completed works (journal submissions, events, panels, conferences, etc.)
The applicant’s documents will be reviewed by the Policy and Practice Visiting Associates program review committee. This review committee will return a decision to the applicant within two weeks of application submission. Beyond a basic accept/reject framework, an invitation for further discussion is also possible. As the program is based on alignment between Pulte Institute objectives and Visiting Associate professional goals, it is common for an initial application to lead to iterative discussion and refinement of potentially successful proposals.
The Pulte Institute invites applications from scholars, policy-makers, and practitioners who publish evidence-based research to influence public policy and practice, who would like to have a significant impact on global policy issues. While we welcome applications from persons of all career and education levels, we have found that those who have completed a degree at the master’s level (or with equivalent career experience) tend to be the most successful. Foreign nationals must have a valid passport and the ability to obtain a J-1 Visa. Advanced English language proficiency is required.
