- We admit outstanding graduates from economics, sociology or other social sciences who hold a master‘s degree or diploma and have a strong interest in labour market research.
- Doctoral students benefit from a professional research and policy consulting environment which enables them to apply their knowledge in academic and applied empirical research. Students are enrolled at FAU or at another university of choice.
- The course programme gives training on theoretical and empirical methods at an advanced level. The courses are held in English.
- Scholarship holders are granted access to the IAB‘s unique data resources on employment and social security (administrative and survey data).
- Applicants are asked to submit a proposal addressing empirical and theoretical research questions in the field of labour market research or the development of the required statistical-econometric methods.

The programme is comprised of five partial tasks and is aimed at consolidating and extending theoretical, methodical and applied skills in the field of labour market research. Special value is laid on interdisciplinarity.
Structure of the Study Programme
Tasks 1-3: Compulsory modules and elective compulsory modules
In the course of the study programme, participants first enrol in two compulsory modules: statistics and econometrics; the sociological and economic basis of labour market research. The aim of these compulsory modules is to provide a basis of knowledge in the relevant subjects. They are offered each year after a new intake of graduates.
In addition to this, graduates attend elective compulsory courses where knowledge is consolidated and access to important theoretic models and methods of empirical work facilitated. The points of time during doctoral studies at which the elective compulsory modules may be attended are flexible.
Although the elective compulsory modules are offered by IAB (GradAB elective compulsory courses), they may partially be completed externally e.g. “Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (BGPE)”. Graduates give proof of their successful attendance of the compulsory and elective compulsory modules by taking an examination.
Task 4: Presentation at the GradAB Jour fixe
Graduates present the progress of their dissertation once a year at the GradAB Jours fixes. Along with the graduates, mentors and supervising professors also attend.
Task 5: Attending lectures
During lectures within the framework of the IAB Colloquium or in the doctoral research seminars at the School of Business and Economics of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, doctoral candidates have the opportunity of discussing current research results and innovative projects and approaches with external academics in order to gain valuable feedback for their own work.
