REVOLUTIONARY SUMMER SCHOOL @ TPF 2021

Revolutionary Summer School @ TPF is a virtual* summer program for organizers, visionaries and people in resistance to oppression. In this introductory-level program, students will develop their method to analyze the past and present, build capacities for movement building through studying examples of revolutionary processes around the world, and expand their vision for a transformed future. This program is based in the methodology of popular and political education, and in the politics of working class internationalism.

*If you are based in the New York area, you have the option to participate in discussion sessions in-person at The People’s Forum!

Study blocks for the program are:

PHILOSOPHY • HISTORY • POLITICAL ECONOMY • ORGANIZATIONAL THEORY

Class topics include:

The Marxist Method • Cultural Hegemony • Origins of Capitalism • Intro to Political Economy • The Division of Labor Under Capital • WEB DuBois and Black Reconstruction • Intro to Imperialism • The Russian Revolution and the Global South • Black Freedom Struggle • Neoliberalism

WHY

“Nobody has yet made a successful revolution without a revolutionary theory.” -Amilcar Cabral

“Without revolutionary theory, there is no revolutionary movement.” – VI Lenin

In the world we live in today, the majority of education we receive is created by the oppressors.  The ideology we are fed in most schools and institutions is ruling class ideology, and this does not further our struggle or serve the needs of the working class. We know that we need political education for the survival of our people. We need political education to arm our people for class struggle, clearer and more urgent in the realities made clear from the global pandemic.

We need political education for liberation!

We intend for this program to provide a structured path of study to build capacity to engage with revolutionary theory and to organize in working class movements.  This is an introductory course that we hope will inspire people to continue their studies as lifelong students of revolution, and we hope that those who participate in this program will share the resources and replicate their knowledge as widely as possible with their communities.

WHO

We ask specifically for applications from those who are involved in or would like to be involved in educational work with their base and/or their community.  Enrolled students will be part of a cohort and are encouraged to make connections with their fellow students and discuss and debate with each other throughout the  program. This is a large time commitment, and we ask you to apply only if you feel that you are able to attend multiple sessions a week and dedicate time to prepare and reflect on each session. For those who are interested but unable to attend the class schedule, we will provide resources for self study.

Class teachers are experienced popular educators with practice in political education for people’s organizations. We also encourage students to attend TPF’s summer programming with public intellectuals and movement leaders.

WHEN

The program starts officially on June 22 and will run for 10 weeks, ending on August 31.

Classes are held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 8pm EST, with Tuesday as a class and Thursday a discussion session. Some variations in this schedule may occur.

**Example: the first week of the program is Tuesday, June 22 (class) and Thursday, June 24 (discussion).**

A required orientation session will be held on Thursday, June 17 at 6 PM. This will be an opportunity to meet the cohort of participants and ask any questions you may have about the program. We will also share study strategies and tips during this time.

All sessions are held on Zoom, with the option for those local to the New York area to attend Thursday discussion sessions in-person at The People’s Forum.
